Bennie Neal (Winget) Thompson

Bennie W. Thompson, age 97 of Charlotte, NC passed away October 5, 2016.                                                                        

The funeral service will be 1:00 Friday, October 7, 2016 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 15000 York Road, Charlotte. Interment will be in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church following the burial.

Mrs. Thompson was born August 24, 1919 in Mecklenburg County, NC to the late Thomas W. and Mary Allen Wilson Winget.  She was the widow of H. Starr Thompson. Also preceding her in death were her siblings Margaret Sue Drumheller, Martha Choate, Sarah Blackwelder, and Sam Winget.  

She is survived by her son, Hugh Thompson (Jean) of Charlotte; daughter, Mary T. Hammond of Charlotte; sister, Jane Harper of Tirzah, SC; grandchildren: Elaine Hammond (John Donald), Emily Warnke (Matt), Russ Hammond (Heather), Laura Thompson, Harry Thompson (Meredith); great-grandchildren:  Henry Donald, Margaret Donald, Leah Warnke, Charlie Warnke, and Alaina Thompson.

Mrs. Thompson was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Nothing brought her more joy than being with her family.  She loved flowers, cooking, sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, cross stitch, and bowling.  Those who knew her could always count on her cheerful spirit and friendly smile. She faithfully served her Lord and the church as a children’s Sunday School teacher, an active Circle member, an Elder, and Clerk of Session.  She also received the Honorary Life Membership in the Women of the Church of the Presbyterian Church U.S.

The family extends their special thanks to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region and the staff of Mecklenburg Health Center.
