Charles Taylor Hawkins, Sr.

January 22, 1924 ~ February 1, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Charles Taylor Hawkins, Sr, husband, father, grandfather, friend and widely known as ‘Good Time Charlie’, died February 1, 2016, a week after he turned 92. He joins his beloved wife Beryl Pitchford Hawkins, who passed away just over a year ago. Charlie and Beryl were long-time residents of River Hills Plantation, Lake Wylie, SC.  For the past year, Charlie resided at Westminster Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Hill, SC. There, he spread his reputation as the ‘Jewelry Man’ (a relatively late-in-life creative adventure) who made necklaces that were in great demand. A native of Richmond, VA, he was the son of Aubrey Hawkins and Agnes Taylor Hawkins.  His grandfather, Charles E. Taylor, was president of Wake Forest University and his great grandfather, Charles E. Williams, was president of Yale University.  He served in World War II with the 99thReconnaissance Troop and received two purple hearts for injuries incurred during the Battle of the Bulge. The King of Belgium honored him with the country’s highest award - The Fourragere.

He retired from Equifax Services after 50 years as District Sales Manager for North and South Carolina. He married his teenage sweetheart Beryl, also of Richmond, and they had a great 68 years together, highlighted by trips around the world with adventures he only occasionally exaggerated. They had 3 children, Pamela Leigh Lewanda and husband Marek of both Stamford, Ct and Savannah, Ga; Cheryl Lynn Theriault and husband Joe of Raleigh, NC; and Charles Taylor Hawkins, Jr and wife Linda of Forest Hill, MD. He also is survived by 3 grandchildren, Joe Theriault Jr., and Lauren and Sarah Hawkins.

He was a member of River Hills Community Church, where he served on the church council, and The Journey at Lake Wylie. He was a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and River Hills Lions Club.  He was on the Lake Wylie Marine Commission and served two years as chairman.  He was president of Carolina Golf and Country Club for four years.  He also served as President of Charlotte Sales and Marketing Executives and was past Commodore of River Hills Yacht Club.  He served on the Board of Directors for River Hills Country Club.  He was a member of the Alpine Masonic Lodge.  In his later life, he served as an arbitrator for the South Carolina Juvenile Criminal Justice Department.

A celebration of his life with full military honors, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016 at The Journey at Lake Wylie, 5415 Highway 557, Lake Wylie, SC with the Rev. Kenny Ashley officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlie’s honor may be made to Hospice & Community Care, 2275 India Hook Rd, Rock Hill, SC, 29732.
