Dr. Andrew Jackson Lewis, Jr.

Dr. Andrew J. Lewis, Jr. was born in Colerain, NC, September 8, 1932 son of Hazel Miller Lewis and Andrew J. Lewis, Sr.  He lived his early years in North Carolina and moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1940.  Jack enjoyed sports at Ramsay High School.  He was president of the student body.  He lettered in football, basketball, track and tennis.  He was captain of the football team and high school All American.  In tennis, he was runner up in the state doubles one year and then the singles another year.  In football he played two post season All Star games, one in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and in Corpus Cristi, TX, the high school All American game.  He scored two touchdowns as the East beat the West 12 to 7.

Dr. Lewis went to Wake Forest College on a football scholarship.  He played football at a time when most players played offense and defense.  His position was end.  He lead the team in scoring two years and was selected outstanding player his Junior year and captain of the team his Senior Year.  He played in the Shriner’s Bowl Christmas Day in Miami and then the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.  His joy of athletics was shown when he was the outstanding intramural athlete two different years.  Aside from athletics he was there for a premedical education.  He belonged to four different pre-med associations.  He was a member of Kappa Alpha social fraternity and selected to ODK and selected on of ten outstanding seniors.  He graduated cum laude.

Jack attended the Medical College of Alabama graduating in 1957.  He was president of the Freshman class.  He did a rotating internship at St. Vincent’s hospital.  He was in the residency program at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now Wake Forest School of Medicine).  There he spent a year on surgery and three years in obstetrics and gynecology.  He presided as chief resident 1961-1962.

Dr. Lewis entered private practice in 1962 with Dr. Charles Brown and Dr. Posey Downs in Charlotte, NC.  He practiced forty four years until several back surgeries made retirement necessary.

He enjoyed retirement with his wife, Rosemary Johnston Lewis and passed away peacefully in their home.  Together they enjoyed traveling, reading, various sports and being beach bums.

He leaves behind his loving wife, four sons, one daughter, two step sons, several grandchildren and one Boston terrier.
