Dr. Michael J McCarthy

Dr. Michael J. McCarthy of Lake Wylie, SC, formerly of Flemington, NJ, died of natural causes on August 16, 2015 in Charlotte, NC.

Dr. McCarthy was born August 22, 1932 in New York City to immigrant parents from Ireland, the late John and Catherine O’Donoghue-McCarthy.

He is survived by his wife Anne Ruckel McCarthy, son Michael McCarthy, Jr (Fatima) of San Diego, CA, daughters Elisabeth McCarthy-Rebels of Lake Wylie, Maura McCarthy-Sanborn (Gary) of Charlotte, and five grandchildren: Kaela, Aidan, Owen, Anna and Kian.

Dr. McCarthy was a graduate of Queens College in New York City and University of Basel Medical School in Basel, Switzerland. He earned specialties in both pediatric and family medicine.  He was an intern at St Vincent’s Hospital in New York City (where he met Anne, a Registered Nurse), took advanced training at the Buffalo Children’s Hospital, served at Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in Manhattan and began the practice of pediatric medicine in Bronx, NY. He subsequently relocated to Bridgewater, NJ and became Associate Director of Clinical Cardiovascular-Renal research at Hoechst-Roussel Inc.

He began a family medical practice in 1978 in Raritan, NJ and retired after almost 30 fulfilling years.  He was Board Certified in Family Medicine and was a Fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine.

During his time in practice he was on the medical staff at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville NJ and was an Assistant Professor at U.M.D.N.J. Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway NJ, where he received the “Outstanding Service Award”.
Dr. McCarthy was passionate about medicine and the health of the human body, in particular environmental medicine. He cared deeply about his patients and they greatly valued his skills and admired his compassion, including voting him “Best Doctor in the County”.

After his retirement to Lake Wylie, SC, he pursued his hobbies of carpentry and amateur radio for which he obtained his license to operate as a member of the Gaston County Amateur Radio Society.  He had a talent for learning and speaking foreign languages and recently took upon himself to learn Russian to read Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” in the original language. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Clover Area Assistance Center in Clover, SC.

Memorial Mass will be 11:00am on Friday, August 21, 2015 at All Saints Catholic Church, 530 Hwy 274, Lake Wylie, SC.
