Welcome to the memorial page for

Wilbur Smithies

April 27, 1924 ~ February 19, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Wilbur Smithies, age 92, completed his earthly journey on Sunday, February 19, 2017 and passed peacefully on to his next adventure in heaven where he is undoubtedly dancing with his beloved wife, Dolores, and reuniting with his son, Doug, and many family and friends whom have made the journey before him.

He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be incredibly missed by his son John and wife Robin, his daughter Laura and husband David, his grandson Silas and wife Shannon and his two great grandchildren, Foster and Avery. He will also be missed by many extended family members whom he loved dearly. In addition, he leaves behind a stepdaughter whom he cared for and raised as his own.

While family was most important in Will’s life, he also had a successful career as an electrical engineer after he was discharged from the army after WWII.  He had many hobbies including fishing, reading, finances, tending to his yard and listening to big band music. He was an avid ACC basketball fan and loved the Duke Blue Devils. He also was active well into his later years and enjoyed such sports as swimming, bowling, golfing and walking. Despite dealing with declining health in his last couple of years, he maintained his feisty personality and lived life to the fullest.  A heartfelt thanks to Anisa and Christina for all of their love and care they gave to help him do just that!

A celebration of life will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Good Samaritan UMC in Lake Wylie SC.  The family will receive friends 1 hour before the service at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215 or the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, P. O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
