Carmen Meyer-Cuno Obituary

Mrs. Carmen Maria Smith Meyer-Cuno,85, of Lake Wylie, SC, passed away Friday, March 15, 2024.

Mrs. Meyer-Cuno was born October 27, 1938, in Boston, MA, to the late Paul Vere Smith and Esther Redondo Smith Tesorero.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jurgen Richard Meyer-Cuno.

She is survived by her son, Doug Meyer-Cuno (Margaret), Lake Wylie, SC, her daughter, Lisa Brinson (David), Lake Wylie, SC, her grandchildren, Addison Claire Gilbert (Brendan), Erin Campbell Meyer-Cuno (Jeff Swanson), Logan Jansen Hunter (Amanda), and Brenna McCanless Vargas (Emmanuel), her step grandchildren, Andrew Jefferson Powell, IV, and Ashley Ann Powell, her great grandchild, Brynn Claire Gilbert, and her sister, Mercedes Smith O’Connor.

Carmen graduated high school from Marycliff Academy in 1957 and went on to complete her BA degree from Wheaton College. She graduated in June of 1961, and in the same month of 1961, she married the love of her life, whom she called Mr Wonderful, Jurgen Meyer-Cuno. Jurgen was in the US Army and stationed in France; hence, they immediately moved to Europe.  They returned in the summer of 1962 and settled in Sudbury, MA where both of their children Doug and Lisa were born.

They moved to Charlotte, NC in the fall of 1965, a decision she would consider one of the best in her life as she loved the south. They quickly became active in the local community and in politics. Eventually, Carmen became the vice chairwoman of the League of Women Voters, and Republican Affairs of the largest precinct in Charlotte.

In the summer of 1973, they moved to the lake front community called River Hills in Clover, SC. They continued to be involved in the community and the Republican Party.  Carmen taught Social Studies and South Carolina History in the Clover Public School System and became a successful real estate agent. However, she is fondly remembered by her students as a tremendous teacher full of energy and passion.

Carmen frequently shared her passion for travel, politics, wine, and sports with her friends and others.  She was an avid reader. A devoted grandmother, Carmen loved to talk about her grandchildren.  She took an active role with all four, and each of them have special bonding memories they will cherish for a lifetime.
