Richard Gene Gibson, 91, of River Hills, succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease on Sunday, September 15, 2019.
Holy Rosary will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 21st with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 530 Highway 274, Lake Wylie, SC, with Father Ed presiding. A reception will follow in the Parish Life Center. He will be laid to rest at the River Hills Cemetery.
He was born April 20, 1928 in Pine Hall, NC, to Silas and Carrie (Boyles) Gibson. He graduated from Pine Hall High School in 1945 and from Lees-McRae College in 1947. He worked as a clerk for the Western Electric Company in Winston Salem, NC, until being inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951. His military service brought him to Fort Mac, outside Atlanta, GA, where he met, courted, and married Miriam (Healy) Gibson on September 6, 1952. His B.S. in Textile Engineering from Georgia Tech University in 1955 resulted in a successful career in the Textile Fibers Department of E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in Wilmington, DE, from which he retired in 1985.
He loved sports, especially golf, and achieved a life-long dream of moving his family to a golf-course community, River Hills Plantation, in 1972. Passionately competitive, but always fair and humble, he won numerous golf tournaments. He was elected and served as the president of the River Hills Country Club. His hobbies centered on making beautiful objects, ranging from stained glass windows to furniture.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Although he was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his wife Miriam (in 1996), he will be sadly missed by nineteen great-grandchildren, fifteen grandchildren and his five children: Richard Gibson Jr. (Karen), Michael Gibson (Rose), Gail Bernard (Mike), Cheryl Barvinek (Joel), and Donna Carpenter (Larry- deceased).
Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church Building Fund, 530 Highway 274, Lake Wylie, SC or Lake Wylie Rescue Squad, 152 Heritage Drive, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.
A special thank you to the staff of Westminster Towers and Hospice Care of South Carolina for their professional care and support during his final years.
