Roger Derrick Tinsley of Belmont, NC passed away unexpectedly, on Friday, May 19, 2017, at the age of 36. Roger was born to Robert Jerry Tinsley and Margaret Whisnant Tinsley on August 6, 1980 in Brevard, North Carolina. He was energetic, with a persevering entrepreneurial spirit, launching his first business at the early age of 8 years old. Roger earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1998 and graduated from Brevard High School in 1999. He completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a specialty in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Appalachian State University. Following graduation, Roger began his career in restaurant management in Huntington Beach, California. He transitioned into the mortgage industry; achieving the position of mortgage consultant. Roger returned to NC to marry his college sweetheart, Sierra, and continue to pursue his business career at Myers Park Mortgage, in Charlotte. In 2011, he was named mortgage consultant of the year by the Scotsman Guide and honored as one of the top mortgage consultants in the country. Due to his remarkable business skills, Roger was able to retire from corporate America by age 34, achieving his financial dream. In addition to becoming a published author of collegiate humor, Roger owned and managed luxury vacation cabins in East Tennessee. He founded Black Bear Vacations, LLC and proceeded to become a successful real estate investor.
Roger was full of life, never missing an opportunity to bring wit and laughter into every situation; always bringing joy to everyone he met, not wanting attention put on himself. His passions were snowboarding, ATV adventures, sky diving, wake boarding, hunting, and boating. He recently advanced quickly through the Martial Arts program, Jujitsu, being steps away from earning a blue belt. Roger was an accomplished and brilliant man, kind and generous with his employees, using his financial success to bless others; which was particularly apparent following the recent devastating wildfires in TN. He was a mentor and an inspiration.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife, Sierra; and their children; Kaya Faith and Eli Samuel, his parents Jerry and Margaret Tinsley of Brevard, NC, his sister Kelly Tinsley Rowe and her husband Jeff, of Landrum and Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister Shannon Tinsley Mobley and her husband Kevin of Greenville, SC, and his sister Tara Tinsley Ledbetter and her husband Don of Flat Rock, NC; and by Sierra’s mother Diane DeBruhl and her husband Phil Thompson of Lake Wylie, NC, and Sierra’s father John Schoenheit and his wife Jenivee of Bloomington, IN; brother-in-law, Sam Schoenheit of Weaverville, NC, sister-in-law Karly Rogers of Bonita Springs, FL, sister-in-law Michelle Fowler of Simpsonville, SC,  and Meredith Thompson of Petersburg, VA; as well as 18 nieces and nephews. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Lake Wylie Baptist Church, 16105 Grand Palisades Pkwy. Charlotte, NC. Visitation will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking condolences be made in memory of Roger Tinsley to Hope Rx at hope-rx.org
