Allan Melby Obituary

Mr. Allan L. Melby, 82, of Clover, SC, passed away Monday, June 14, 2021 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC following a short illness.

A Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2021 at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church, 148 St. Dorothy's Ln., Lincolnton, NC 28092. Burial will be immediately following at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Lincolnton, NC.

Mr. Melby was born May 7, 1939 in Thief River Falls, MN to the late Orrin and Viola Berry Melby. He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran serving 4 years at Lackland and Sheppard Air Force Bases in Texas. On July 20th, 1963 he married Ardythe Bergstrom and together they raised 3 children. He had a successful career as a cosmetic chemist holding several patents. During his career he worked for General Mills Corporation, LaMaur Inc, Paula Payne, Merck, and Calgon Corporation (a division of Nalco). His long career allowed him to travel extensively all over the globe and live in several states including Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. He was a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Mr. Melby loved gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, watching football games(especially the Vikings, Panthers, and Steelers), and going to the beach. He was known for his dry humor and wit, often telling corny ‘dad’ jokes.

Survivors are his wife, Ardythe Bergstrom Melby; daughter, Kim Holmwood (Rodney) of Cohocton, NY; sons, Allan L. Melby, Jr. (Lynne) of Roaring River, NC and Stephen D. Melby (Isabel) of Lincolnton, NC; sisters, Susan Harmoning of Red Lake Falls, MN, Mary Rindahl (Don) of Bemidji, MN, Rebecca Svaren (Dale) of Twin Valley, MN, and Carolyn Rystad (Roy) of Oklee, MN; brothers, David Melby (Gloria) of St. Cloud, MN, Michael Melby (Susan) of Thief River Falls, MN, Robert Melby (Phyllis) of Oklee, MN and John Melby (Lori) of Oklee, MN; sister-in-law, Judy Melby of Thief River Falls, MN; many nephews and nieces; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Melby and a brother-in-law, Cal Harmoning.
