Amy Jo McMacken-O'Brien Obituary

Amy Jo McMacken-O’Brien, age 67 passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025 at the Lake Wylie, SC home she shared with her husband Joe for 29 years.

Left to cherish her memory are Amy’s siblings Thomas McMacken Jr. (Ann), Deborah Ransom (Guy), and David McMacken (Shelley), her nephews and nieces; Erin Kilcoyne (Jim), Scott McMacken (Dee), Emily Schumpert (Trey), Andy McMacken (Noel), grand nieces and nephews; Brynn and Remi Kilcoyne, Kiara McMacken, Rory and Ian McMacken along with her husband and his entire family, who loves her so dearly.

Amy was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mary McMacken.

Born in Toledo, OH and raised just minutes away in Sylvania, OH Amy graduated from Sylvania High School and later graduated from Bowling Green State University Bowling Green, OH with a degree in communications.  Putting her education to work, Amy excelled in customer relations and inside sales while working in Ohio and the Carolinas.  Being a true people person she was a natural in her field.

Amy met her husband Joe in 1994.  Two years later they moved to Lake Wylie, SC Where they have spent the last 29 years together.

Travel was a love of Amy’s and she was fortunate to enjoy many Caribbean, Costa Rican, Mexican and Carolina beaches with her husband.  After retiring, travel brought them to Europe twice to visit towns and cities in Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Greece and Turkey where they toured the Vatican, viewed the Eiffel Tower while on an evening Seine River cruise, witnessed the rebuilding of Notre Dame Cathedral and visited the site where the Virgin Mary resided after the death of her son Jesus.  But most treasured by Amy was her visit to the Normandy, France Beaches when she walked on the sands where on D-Day her father Tom fought in service of the country he loved.

A consummate Michigan Wolverine fan, Amy followed the McMacken family tradition of carving out a large block of time on Saturdays during the season to attend or view their games on TV.  So strong was Amy’s devotion to the team that it was understood watching the scheduled game to be aired on her wedding day was mandatory.

Golf also was of great interest to Amy, whether playing, witnessing tour events or watching tournaments on TV she loved the game.

Decorating the house for Christmas was another passion of Amy’s.  Starting at Thanksgiving she would adorn several rooms in their home with holiday décor, then meticulously place on their tree hundreds of ornaments she had acquired over the years. Most treasured were those handmade by her family members and those she acquired during her travels.

Amy’s love for her family, husband and friends was endless and will continue as she enters this next chapter, joining her parents in God’s hands.  We love you Amy and will miss you so dearly.

To fulfill Amy’s wishes a short private service will be held in Lake Wylie with a private family service to be held in Sylvania, OH at a later date.
