Mr. Claas Herman van Vierssen, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Mill, SC on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 surrounded by his wife and family after losing his battle with cancer.
Mr. van Vierssen was born in 1934 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands to the late Claas Herman van Vierssen and Jannigje Lijsje Baelde.
Mr. van Vierssen studied chemical engineering at the Technological University of Delft where he received a master’s degree in 1958. He served for two years as a lieutenant in the Royal Netherlands Navy and then worked in industrial research and development from 1960 to 1964. He was appointed Assistant Scientific Attaché for the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington D.C. in 1964 and served as Scientific Attaché from 1966 to 1982. After leaving the embassy, he pursued various business ventures in residential real estate until retiring in 2019.
Survivors are his wife of 67 years, Hetty van Vierssen; daughter Stella Matthes (Fred) of Herndon, VA; sons Alexander van Vierssen (Karen) of York, SC, Marcel van Vierssen (Julie) of Herndon, VA and Ronald van Vierssen (Derek Titcomb) of Dewy Rose, GA; sister Gonny Elands; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Nico van Vierssen.
A private celebration of life will be held in York, SC on Sunday May 14th.
