David Mayo Obituary

David P. Mayo was born in Evanston, Illinois on October 10, 1938, to Eleanor Turnbull Mayo and Peter Brierly Mayo. He attended Utah State University for two years while homesteading land and developing a family ranch. He then transferred to the University of Arizona where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. At college, he met the first love of his life, Judy Bolt, at the post office. Upon graduation, Dave and Judy married on September 3, 1960. After watching the movie “Around the World in 80 Days” they decided they wanted to travel the world. Dave then enrolled and earned his International Business Graduate Degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management. Dave accepted a job with Central Soya and worked with them for over twenty years as a General Manager in Trinidad, Brazil, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. His last four years he was the Area General Manager responsible for all Latin America. Dave eventually retired in the beautiful River Hills community in Lake Wylie, SC.

He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-six years, Judy Bolt Mayo, brothers Peter Mayo and John Mayo, and son-in-law, Jeffrey Allen Pompeo-Mayo.

He is survived by the second love of his life, Page Munroe Renger of Charlotte, NC; son Scott David Mayo (Kelly) of Powhatan, VA; daughters Jennifer Lynn Mayo of Wilmington, DE, and Tricia Mayo Moore (Ed) of Alexandria, VA; also, by six beloved grandchildren Pierce Charles Mayo, Griffin Bolt Mayo, Jody Lee Mayo, Jilly Taylor Mayo, Ella Madison Moore and Tess Margaret Moore.

He was fearless and his life was full of adventures such as participating in Carnival in Brazil, skiing black diamonds at Vail and Park City, rafting down the Colorado River, parasailing in Tahiti, bobsledding down the Olympic Park City run, paragliding off the top of Aspen Mountain, skydiving with friends using a Groupon coupon, and driving on the Charlotte Motor Speedway in a NASCAR car.

After Judy’s passing, Dave was lucky enough to meet Page Renger. Dave and Page shared seventeen wonderful years together traveling the globe and having good times with family and friends wherever they went. These past few years, Page was his rock. She was always by his side encouraging and caring for him by cooking his favorite meals, taking Rock Steady and Boxing classes with him, or bringing him his favorite rum raisin ice cream.

Dave was one of a kind. He was passionate about traveling and there weren’t many countries he hadn’t visited. His family, faith, and patriotism were the core of his being. He had a heart of gold and was a man of integrity, honor, and character. He was a doer, self-reliant, hard worker, and expected the best of himself, his family, and of others. One of his favorite quotes was “Quitters never win, and winners never quit.”

He will be remembered for being the life of the party, dancing and starting conga lines with a Cuba Libre or Red Stripe in hand, his crazy and usually inappropriate antics, and of course his legendary clapping. He loved music and was an incredible tennis player, skier, and swimmer who could effortlessly swim a lap underwater without taking a breath.

We are sure he is smiling down at us now, surrounded by loved ones, whooping it up.

Everyone has a Dave Mayo story, and we’d love to hear them all. Please share them in the comments section below.
