Mr. Douglas Thornberg, 62, passed away Monday, April 6, 2026 at Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, SC.
Douglas was born April 11, 1963 in Rochester, NY to the late Donald Lewis Thornberg and Janet Carol Loosman. He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran and retired Air Traffic Controller.
Doug joined the Air Force right after high school. He spent almost two years in Germany, before finishing out his service in Dover, Delaware. Afterwards, he worked at several jobs until he was hired by the FAA, where he trained and became an Air Traffic Controller. He spent his entire career at Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, California. He retired to Charlotte, North Carolina.
He is survived by his longtime loving partner, Delilah Dean Hanner, a fellow air traffic controller, whom he met at the start of his career.
Doug, a dedicated and talented bowler, played in many leagues and tournaments throughout his life. One of his biggest accomplishments were his 300 games; the first in 2020 and the final one the night of his passing, where he was surrounded by Delilah and friends.
He was also an avid golfer and played both Pebble Beach and Pinehurst. He enjoyed assembling furniture and yard equipment. He liked making people laugh. He was always a gentleman and never hesitated to help a neighbor or friend.
A memorial service will be 11:30 am Saturday, April 25, 2026 at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, 4820 Charlotte Highway, Lake Wylie, SC. We will receive friends 1 hour before the service at the funeral home.
