E. Ray Morrison, 94, died March 1st, 2026 at his home in Lake Wylie, SC, surrounded by loving family.
Ray was born on April 1, 1931, in Norfolk County, Virginia, to Albert Sidney Morrison and Dorothy Loskum Morrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Albert S. Morrison, Jr.; and his sister, Edna M. Durham.
After graduating from Portlock High School in 1948, Ray worked at the Naval Operating Base in Norfolk until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. He was wounded while serving in Korea, received the Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Following his service, Ray worked for Prudential Life Insurance Company and was a member of Masonic Lodge 196.
Music and service were central parts of Ray’s life. He served as Minister of Music for many churches over the years, including: Thalia Lynn Baptist Church and Kempsville Baptist Church in Kempsville, Virginia; Northside Baptist Church and Zion Hope Baptist Church in Tifton, Georgia; First Baptist Church in Wetumpka, Alabama; McKee Road Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church, Woodlawn Baptist Church, Carmel Baptist Church, and Midwood Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also served as president of the Charlotte Philharmonic Chorus in 1999 and 2000.
His commitment of service also extended to a long career in the food service industry. His positions included working for The White Horse Restaurant and The Charlotte City Club in Charlotte, North Carolina; the Green Boundary Club in Aiken, South Carolina; the Park Hotel in Charlotte; and eleven years with the Executive Dining Room at the corporate headquarters of Wells Fargo Bank. He was also a member of the Club Managers Association of America and the Chaine des Rôtisseurs.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Jean C. Morrison; step-son, Stuart B. Presley (Lynn) and children, Calista and Tristan and great-grandchild Ruby; and by his 8 children with his first wife, Betty B. Morrison: Betsy M. Windham; Mark E. Morrison (Robin); Wendy M. Coleman (Gene); David S. Morrison; Ruth M. Helms (Marty); James A. Morrison (Karen); John S. Morrison (Juli); Tabitha M. Wood (Scott); and by 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Committal Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 4, 2026, in the River Hills/Lake Wylie Cemetery, with the Rev. Bruce Jones officiating.
