Mr. Marshall, 79, of York SC, died April 10, 2025, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House in Rock Hill SC, a few days after suffering a second massive hemorrhagic stroke, fourteen years after the first stroke.
A graveside services for Forrest Joe Marshall will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in Forest Hills Cemetery in Rock Hill, SC, with the M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in charge. There will be no calling hours. Forrest attended Lake Wylie Christian Assembly and the pastor, Rev. Lewis Gunn will be officiating the service.
He was born January 3, 1946, in Wolf Island, Missouri. His parents Joe Tom & Beatrice (Newberry) Marshall preceded him in death. He was a 1964 graduate of Charleston High School in Charleston, Missouri. He married Donna Gail Mathis on June 20, 1964, in Wyatt, Missouri.
Forrest was the son of a sharecropper and he grew up thinking he was supposed to be a preacher so he attended one year of Bible college in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before deciding God had not called him to be a preacher just because he was told that’s what he was supposed to do with his life. He decided he wanted to be a mechanical engineer.
He & Donna moved back to Missouri & he spent two years in the pre-engineering program at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. They did not have any type of financial assistance and at one time Forrest was working seven part-time jobs while Donna worked full-time. He transferred to the University of Missouri in Rolla, Missouri, in 1967 and graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1969.
Upon graduation, he began his career with General Tire & Rubber Company/Continental Tire in Mayfield, Kentucky. He worked in corporate offices in Akron, Ohio & Charlotte, NC. Several years after retirement, he started a new career as Quality Control Manager at Composite Resources in Rock Hill, SC and continued working there until he had the first massive hemorrhagic stroke in 2011.
He had no physical problems after the stroke and craniotomy, but he was left with aphasia to deal with. It was frustrating for him, but he could still accomplish a lot even though it took him longer to figure things out. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2019, but he did not let any of his medical issues get him down. His favorite pastime after the stroke was working on jigsaw puzzles along with his wife/caregiver Donna. He & Donna also enjoyed riding their adult trikes around their neighborhood.
In addition to his parents, Forrest was preceded in death by his younger brother Terry Bruce Marshall and his youngest sister Lisa Marshall.
He is survived by his wife, his son Timothy Joe (Emily) Marshall of Rock Hill SC, his daughter Leigh Andrea (Rick) Laney of Knoxville, TN, his grandchildren Bryant Laney, Rebeccah (Tyler) Moore and Brendan Laney and his great-grandchildren Ansel Laney and Cyrus, Carolina and Charlie Ann Moore, sisters LaDonna Grissom of Missouri and Necia (Robert) Maxfield of Oklahoma.
