Mrs. Hetty Josephine Verplak van Vierssen, 95, of York, SC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 14, 2024 in Rock Hill, SC.

Hetty was born in 1929 in Semarang, Indonesia to the late Hendrikus Joseph Verplak and Cornelia Augusta Jonxis.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Claas Herman van Vierssen, and her sisters, Yvonne, Agnes, Marijke, and Eugenie.

Hetty grew up in Indonesia and in the Netherlands, surviving the horrors of World War II in both the Pacific and in Europe.  She always had an interesting family story to tell and many wartime memories to relay. After marrying Herman and moving to the United States in 1964, Hetty spent many years entertaining diplomats and visitors through the Netherlands embassy. She enjoyed painting and golf, winning several trophies at Westwood Country Club.  In the 1980s, Hetty began a career in real estate which she remained involved in until recently.

Survivors include her daughter Stella Matthes (Fred) of Herndon, VA; sons Alexander van Vierssen (Karen) of York, SC, Marcel van Vierssen (Julie) of Herndon, VA, and Ronald van Vierssen (Derek) of Dewy Rose, GA; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a global family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
