The Commander took his final flight. He ls now with his Lord and Savior, James (Jim) LeRoy Brown, Jr. was born November 28, 1923, in Sherman Texas. Jim, 100, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 6. 2024
During his 100 years on this planet Earth, Jim led a remarkable life. He served as a nighttime Naval Aviator in World War ll, flying some of the well-known propeller fighter aircraft. He then served as a Naval Aviator in the Korean War, flying the new jet fighter aircraft. Commander Brown was a true American Hero earning numerous military awards, including The Distinguished Flying Cross.
After he went back to civilian life Jim opened his own insurance agency in Overland Park, Kansas.
While Jim was not serving his country anymore In the US Navy, he continued to serve his community of Overland Park Kansas and the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. Jim served with the Shriners. He took great pride doing volunteering, assisting in fundraising events, taking part in Shriners Parades, and referring children and their families to the Shriner organization who could benefit from their services.
Jim had hobbies that kept him busy. He built radio-controlled airplanes. He drew many types of pictures with pencil and oil paints drawing airplanes, animals, and soldiers. He drew very detailed pictures of the United States of America Presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and Donald J. Trump.
Later in life Jim earned an Associate of Arts Degree from the Community College of Beaver County in Monaca Pennsylvania. He also attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Jim was a very well-respected member of the Lake Wylie Community. Until his death he was one of the oldest living Veterans in the River Hills Community. He was honored each year at the River Hills Country Club Annual Veterans Tournament. Jim loved going to the River Hills Country Club with his family, where many of you shared a magical evening together celebrating his 100th birthday, a surprise vow renewal and wedding. Jim and Margaret enjoyed visiting her family in Scotland, Australia, and Canada as well as other exciting places.
Daughter Jane and Son-in-Law Larry surprised him with a golf cart when he could no longer drive his Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Even their kitties, Biscuit and Gravy, are feeling granddad's loss. Jim loved going to Christopher’s Bar and Grill with his son Symon and Daughter-in-Law Debbie. He would enjoy a shot of Scotch Whiskey and Yuengling Beer. He said that Scotch Whiskey, Beer, Family, and Friends is why he is old and still living. Jim had many close friends in River Hills, such as Jim and Tony, who were very good to him and would come by the house often to visit and enjoy a shot of Scotch Whiskey and a Yuengling Beer.
Jim will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and his community. He was preceded in death by his parents James LeRoy Brown, Sr. and Ethel Roberts Brown, his first wife, Virginia Brown, and his sister, Bettie Weddle.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Margaret Brown, his daughters, Jennifer Jacobs, Pueblo, CO, Beverly Brown Pueblo, CO, Barbara Mitchell (Sam), Overland Park, KS, and Jane Brown (Larry Lewis), Lake Wylie, SC: his son, Symon Davis (Debbie Becker). Lake Wylie, SC: his six grandchildren, Chase, Sarah, Paul, Brandon, Bethany, and Braeden: and his six great-grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., at M. L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home, 4820 Charlotte Hwy., Lake Wylie, SC. A Celebration of Life will be held following the visitation at the River Hills Country Club, 1 Country Club Drive, Lake Wylie, SC, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Our Commander James LeRoy Brown, one of the greatest generation, will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on October 11, 2024.
