James Shanley, Jr. Obituary

James Francis Shanley, Jr., formerly of Pennsylvania and a resident of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sheryl Elise Shanley (née Barnard); his beloved sons, James Matthew Shanley of Mount Joy, PA, and Michael Brian Shanley and his wife Patti of Conshohocken, PA.

He was the proud grandfather of Justin Shanley, Kayla Shanley, James M. Shanley Jr., Michael Brian Shanley Jr., Alicia Shanley, Shana Shanley, Taylor Day, and Morgan Shanley, and the cherished great-grandfather of nine great-grandchildren.

Jim is also survived by his sister, Donna Shanley Barkow and her husband Tom of Austin, TX; and many nieces and nephews including Heather Shanley Fullerton (Rob), Matthew Shanley, Timothy Barkow (Patricia Krueger), Kristen Calnan (Brendan), and Jane Barkow (Rodger Fuller).

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Francis Shanley, Sr. and Margaretta Frances Shanley (née Fox) of Philadelphia, PA; and by his brother, Gerald Shanley and his wife Regina of Williamstown, NJ.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jim attended Glassboro State Teachers College before serving honorably in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany and later received an appointment to West Point.

As a child, Jim was an altar boy and even featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer at the age of four. Despite a childhood battle with rheumatic fever, he went on to become an accomplished athlete, playing softball well into his 50s and enjoying a lifelong passion for golf and boating. A talented pitcher, he once tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies, though an arm injury cut short his opportunity.

A devoted father, Jim poured his time and energy into his sons’ lives serving as a Boy Scout leader, baseball coach, and a member of the local school board.

Jim was an active member of his church, Lakeshore Christian Fellowship, and served in many different areas. Everyone there will always remember him for his quick wit and humor.

Jim retired from The Hartford Insurance Company in 1992 after 20 years of dedicated service. He later continued his professional career with Royal & SunAlliance Insurance and Zero Accident Consulting, working as a risk management and loss prevention consultant.

Jim will be remembered for his devotion to family, his faith, his humor, and his steadfast work ethic. His legacy lives on through the generations of family who loved him deeply.

At the family’s request, there will be no public service. They take peace in knowing he is home with the Lord and are grateful for the many prayers, love, and encouragement extended to them.
