John Chislett Obituary

John Leader Chislett of Lake Wylie, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 26, 1925, the son of John Renshaw Chislett and Rose Leader Chislett, and attended Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh as a young man. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and served on an aircraft carrier with the U.S. Navy as a catapult and arresting gear officer.

John worked in sales and marketing for Alcoa until his retirement. He spent the bulk of his career in international sales and lived with his family in several overseas locations including Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, and Jamaica. He was promoted to President of Alcoa Inter-America when the family moved to Miami, Florida in 1968.

He was a dedicated member of the River Hills Community Church of Lake Wylie since 1977 and served the congregation in many capacities including as a member of the choir. John was also active in community volunteer work, was a member of the River Hills Lions Club, and served as an ambulance driver for the River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS.

John’s entire recreational golf career was served by his beloved custom Ben Sayers Roll-In putter, despite his children’s best attempts to upgrade him to a less outdated tool. He also enjoyed playing tennis, cutting a rug to his favorite bossa nova tunes, eating his daily dose of ice cream—with occasional special trips to The Peach Tree in York, SC—and acting as biscuit distributor to all the neighborhood dogs.

John is survived by his loving wife, Jane Stanley Chislett, a son Jack and his wife Bonnie, a daughter Meg and her wife Ellen, and three granddaughters, Allison, Morgan, and Anna.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the River Hills/Lake Wylie EMS. Interment will occur on a later date in a family plot at the Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
