John Anthony Grum, age 87, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Atrium Main, Charlotte, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18, 2021, at South Park Christian Church, 6650 Park South Drive, Charlotte, NC, with the Rev. Bruce Baker-Rooks officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family requests that masks be worn at the service.
Mr. Grum was born on June 20, 1934, in Deutsch Zepling, Romania, to the late Johannes Grum and Maria Goettfert Grum. He was also preceded in death by his longtime partner, Aretta Grant, his sister, Susan Weurfel, and brother, Hans Goettfert.
John came to the US from Germany in 1952 with his parents. He graduated from Michigan State University and spent most of his career as a chemical engineer working for Celanese/Fiber Industries. For years John enjoyed growing roses and going ballroom dancing. A gifted singer with a beautiful tenor voice, he appeared in countless performances with the Charlotte Oratorio Singers, the Charlotte Opera and CPCC Summer Theater. He was also a longtime member of the choir at SouthPark Christian.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer G. Seiger (Larry), Cary, NC, and Wanda Steele (Marvin), Charlotte, NC; his sons, Bradford A. Grum, Fuquay-Varina, NC, and William S. Ferguson (Sharon), Apex, NC; his grandchildren Ainsley Seiger, New York, NY, Avery Seiger, Cary, NC, Sarah Ferguson, Bonn, Germany, Garrett Ferguson, Apex, NC, Mitchell Ferguson, Apex, NC, and Christopher Steele, Charlotte, NC.
