Lucille Swope Obituary

Lucille Mae Davis Swope, passed away Monday, May 25, 2026 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House, Rock Hill, SC.  She was born July 11, 1950 in Princton, WV to the late Robert Eugene Davis and Charlotte Osborne Davis.

Luci Mae Swope died leaving the world a dimmer place.  She is survived by her husband of 57 ½ years, Joseph Michael Swope; son Michael Andrew “Drew” Swope; sister Marian G. Davis; and her dog and cat, Jefferson and Monroe who she loved.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her youngest son, Joseph Matthew Swope, and brother John Robert Davis.

Luci was an artist, a graphic designer and a beautiful person, in addition to being an enduring, loving mother, and Air Force and Air National Guard wife.  Luci accompanied her husband Mike through the University of Virginia; USAF Undergraduate Pilot training in Del Rio, TX; 36 TAS at Langley AFB, VA, which included a 6-month deployment to Vietnam Nam as well as several 8-week deployments to England and Germany leaving her home alone with two young boys.  That was followed by an assignment to McChord AFB, WA where multiple 6-week deployments to Panama, again left her home to care for the family.  She then accompanied Mike to Arcadia, NC where they resided while Mike attended Wake Forest University School of Law and joined the North Carolina Air National Guard.  After graduation, Luci and Mike moved to Matthews, NC as Mike took a full-time position in the NCANG as a technician instructor pilot.  Mike and Luci later took a position in the Republic of Panama and moved to Howard AFB Panama for three years.  In addition to all the other assignments, there was a last one when Mike accepted a one-year assignment to become Military Liaison Team Chief in Moldova, a former Soviet Republic.  Luci was able to spend a few months in Moldova where she demonstrated one of her defining characteristics, the ability to make friends and win over people, by becoming great friends with the U.S. Ambassador’s wife.   Upon completing that tour, they moved back to the Charlotte, NC area settling down in their current residence in Lake Wylie, SC.

Throughout all the moves, all the extended absences of her husband, Luci maintained her home, raised the children, worked in numerous jobs to help support the family and managed to create numerous pieces of art which still adorn a hallway in her house.  Luci was sweet, beautiful, and was loved by everyone who knew her.

She was a staunch supporter of Women’s Rights, participating in several marches.  She was a Democratic Party enthusiast.  That started when she befriended a girl named Terri McGovern while working at UVA hospital, while Mike was deployed to Vietnam.  Terri was the daughter of Senator George McGovern, candidate for President in 1972.  Terri took Luci along on a couple of campaign trips, including trips to NYC and New Orleans, where she met several famous and interesting people.  She was ardent Democrat from that day forward.

Luci was a bright light in the world who raised a family, ran a household and supported her husband.  She will be greatly missed by all.
