Martin Lewis Obituary

Martin Weakley Lewis, 78, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2021.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Kaye; sons Derek Lewis (Clare Hoffmann) of Lake Wylie, SC, and Keven (Kelly White Lewis) of Pawley's Island, SC; sisters, Anne Weber, of Wilmore, KY and Sue Raymond, of Kansas City, MO.  He is preceded in death by his infant son, John Folkers Lewis.

Martin was born on February 12, 1943, in Whitesburg, Kentucky, to the late Maurice Judson and Mary Emma (Weakley) Lewis.  In high school, Martin participated in football, basketball, and baseball.  He attended the University of Kentucky where he was in the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and majored in Accounting.  He later became a CPA.  In spring of 1963 Martin met Beth Kaye Folkers, when she substituted for another girl on a “blind date”.

After college, Martin worked for Deloitte for 15 years (living 3 years in Brazil), then took a job in Charlotte, NC for Wrenn Handling (later Barloworld), for 27 years.

Martin’s proudest accomplishments included coaching 5-straight Little League Championships; winning the Couples Club golf championships with his wife; and winning the Member/Guest with his brother-in-law, Bud.  He was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan.

He was a member of the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club for 40 years in which he served as Treasurer, and the River Hills Community Church (now CCLW). He loved playing golf and was particularly fond of his Circle of Friends golf group at the River Hills Country Club. Martin loved to travel and visited over 70 countries and all 50 states.  Martin was happily anticipating the arrival of his 1st grandchild in September 2021.

Martin’s final sentence in his autobiography: “I have lived a good life, and achieved many things that I had never imagined while growing up in Letcher County, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachian coal mining territory”.

A celebration of his life will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the River Hills Country Club above the 18th green.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the “River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Community Foundation”, 4100 Charlotte Hwy, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.
