Richard Davis Obituary

Mr. Richard Crist Davis, 86, of Lake Wylie, South Carolina passed at 1815 on May 29, 2023.

Richard was born to Archer and Helen Davis in Philadelphia as the third of 4 sons and the first born of a set of twins deemed, the Angels, by his mother. He attended parochial schools for 12 years and joined the Army after graduation to obtain the GI Bill in order to attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After obtaining his degree he became a doctoral candidate in Archeology at New York University, working midnights in a trucking company’s billing department to make ends meet.

Impecunity led to his illustrious career in insurance in NYC starting as a rising star underwriter with the Traveler Insurance Company then jumping to the brokerage side of casualty and property insurance at 111 John Street with Sweeney and Bell where he rose to the position of Chairman of the Board.

Taking over the office of Bayly, Martin and Fay brought him to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1980. In 1988 he started a staff relief nurse company which endured for 17 years before being sold.

He was an avid reader with the desire to fish whenever he could were his passions, yet still curious he pursued and attained a Master of Liberal Arts from Winthrop University as a non-traditional student. He enjoyed the camaraderie with other students and remained close friends with his professors for years after he obtained his degree and as he continued to audit classes thereafter.

Richard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara, and his adult children Richard, Frederick, Honorine Misner and Leticia Cardonick, his step-sons Michael Linkroum and Danny Linkroum, along with 8 grandchildren. He outlived his parents and three brothers, John, Fred and his twin, Jim.

He requested not to have any celebrations or gatherings in his honor. He will be greatly missed as he, in the words of one of his favorite songs, “goes up to the spirit in the sky”.
