Roy Edward Baker of Lake Wylie, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in his home.
Roy was born February 2, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA to Lewis and Laura Belle Sargent Baker. Beloved husband to Betty Baker for over 70 glorious years. Roy had four siblings, Wilda Mae Baker Rouser, Earl Baker, Laura Baker Payne, and Lew Baker (all predeceased).
He was devoted to his family, especially his two daughters, Deborah Baker Stuck and husband, Robert, of Lake Wylie; Sandra Baker Joyner (predeceased) and husband John, of Charlotte, NC, grandsons John Grayson Joyner of Charleston, SC; Philip Edward Joyner of Raleigh, NC, nieces Robin Baker Goralczyk of Clearwater, FL; Martha Payne of Santa Fe, NM; Darlene Baker Thomas of Princeton, WV. Mandy Stuck Wynkoop, husband Chris and children, Henry, Sam, and Molly who fondly called Roy, Pap Pap; Benjamin Marshall Stuck, wife Lisa, and children Mikaela, Norah, and Judah.
Roy graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, PA early with Honors to pursue his professional baseball career. His baseball career was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Navy to serve his country during the Korean War. He quickly rose to the rank of Chief of Staff for Naval Reserve and Training. Roy was the Chief of Staff to Admiral ER Zumwalt, Jr of US Naval Operations. He remained active until his retirement in May of 1971. During the time he was enlisted, he received many outstanding performance medals. After retirement, he joined Charlotte Country Day School as their General Business Manager. On September 1, 1981, he was recruited by Marshall Air Systems where he was the Vice President of Purchasing until he retired on December 31, 2018, at 92 years of age after 37 years.
Roy was a godly man and member for many years at Calvary Church, Charlotte, NC. More recently, he was a member of Redeeming Grace Presbyterian, Lake Wylie, SC.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, 4820 Charlotte Hwy., Lake Wylie, SC. Interment will be in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 2445 Hwy. 557, Clover, SC, following the service. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 11:15 a.m.
