Herbert Kirsh, 84, of 105 Belwood Drive, died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at CaroMont Health, Gastonia, NC.
Service will be 11:00 am Friday, January 31, 2014 at Temple Emanuel, 320 S. South Street, Gastonia, NC with Rabbi Charles Brown officiating. Former U. S. Rep. John Spratt, D-York and S. C. Rep. Gary Simrill, R-Rock Hill, will speak. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at M. L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Clover and other times at the home of Kevin and Tammy Kirsh, 105 Pressley Street, Clover.
Mr. Kirsh was born May 17, 1929 in Bronx, NY to the late Isadore and Yetta Perotsky Kirsh and had lived in Clover for the past 78 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Suzanne and sons Larry and Bruce.
He was a graduate of Clover High School and Duke University. He owned and operated the Kirsh Family Department Store in Clover. Herb was in the Naval Reserve, a former Sunday School Teacher, CEO of Clover Community Bank, longtime member of Masonic Lodge 208 and a recipient of the S. C. Order of the Palmetto. He was also a member of the R.O.M.E.O Club in Clover (retired old men eating out). They met at Hardees every morning to solve the world’s problems.
Mr. Kirsh served on the Clover Town Council, was Mayor of Clover and then was District 47 State Representative in the S. C. General Assembly from 1978 to 2010. At the time of leaving office, Mr. Kirsh was the longest serving legislator in the State of South Carolina.
Survivors are his sons Kevin Kirsh & wife Tammy and Michael Kirsh of Clover, SC.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Kirsh Family Foundation, c/o Diane Malison, Raymond James Financial Services, 1808 Second Baxter Crossing, Suite 100, Fort Mill, SC 29708. This foundation was created by Herb and Sue Kirsh and family to provide college scholarships for graduating Clover High School seniors.
